Greening Human Rights Protection
in Roma Communities
The project is a research and advocacy initiative. One main component is covering two different featured Roma neighbourhood with Social LAB experiment to gain knowledge and empower Roma youths to act for change on Environmental Justice issues. In 30 communities will conduct an online survey on enviromental Justice to create a solid knowledge about inequalities.
We will support roma, pro-roma NGOs, environmental activists and human rights lawyers to establish
a working group as a "Green" Legal Platform. The porpuse is to analyse the possible path of litigations, also understand what are the soft and hard legal instruments and advocate for better legislation.
Concept
We will set up Environmental Justice Social LAB in two different characteristic Roma neighbourhoods. Will involve 15-15 roma younths and our CBOs partners will coordinate the action reasearch. The aim is to create a platform for mutual and common learning with the involvement of lawyers, develeopment experts and academics. We would explore the environmental non-equalities and what need to be done in terms of re-distribution and in terms of decision-making in both the urban and the rural neighbourhood. We will support the youths to plan and carry out a local advocacy action in each community. We will support their actions with experteese and small grant.
Roma youth are more likely than non-Roma youth to grow up in poor, segregated neighbourhoods. This inequality in the neighbourhood environments of Roma youth increases their contact with hazardous environmental conditions. Some of those are contribute inequality of their health and well being, such as the violence and toxic wast, bad housing, bad schooling conditions. Rather than usual social approaches of a research the project aim to understand, from the perspective of young people themselves, how they interpret environmental disparities of their communities, neighbourhood and their school. Youth may differ significantly in their descriptions of their neighbourhoods from their parents and accounting for these different perspectives allows us to recognise the unique autonomy and opinions of young people, thereby creating a pathway through which youth can be given the opportunity to advocate for their neighbourhoods and start a local advocacy action to initiate change or highlight an issue they consider a priority.
Roma and ProRoma CBOs, Green Organisations, Human rights defenders and Ombudsman of the Right of Minorities and Roma communities in general are the possible stakeholders to improve the Environmental conditions and human rights protection of the Roma communities in the following decades. The platform as an lliance aim to motivate and empower active citizens to be engaged in the Environmental Justice movement and support the environmental consciousness of marginalised communities and be ready for advocacy, litigation and other common actions for change. Aim to generate advocacy tools and define the options and barriers for litigation and set up recommendations for further development, write concept paper about HR protection and litigation and other soft and hard legal instruments regarding to environmental injustice faced by roma communities.
Considering that most of the initiatives are narrowing the experience of women on environmental injustice to the household or body we will ensure that their multilevel of environmental disadvantage and deprivation will be recognised. We will highlight about the need to further integrate a gendered or feminist perspective into environmental justice discourse, analysis and actions during the implementation. Persons with disabilities and women with small children are usually face with transportation issues and bad housing effects their daily routine, well being, opportunities to gain access to services outside the community. We will include gender specific questions into the survey. Will focus on to explore and address the gender difference regarding to EJ from procedural and distributional point of view and regarding to their live and work in circumstances probably the differences are substantive.
